About FNL ... Friday Night Live has been involved with Yuba-Sutter's Young people since 1990, with the intent to help our area's young people succeed as adolescents and adults. FNL Programs Include: ˇ Friday Night Live Chapters: Our original success story continues, with chapters of Friday Night Live at area high schools, Club Live chapter for youth in 6-8 grades, and Kid Live clubs serving 4th and 5th grades. ˇ The Friday Night Live "Youth Live Center": turned a former restaurant in a historic building into a fun, safe place for kids to have a good time. The youth center served 16,847 area 5th through 12th graders in 2003. The FNL Youth Advisory Board (YAB) helps to establish youth center norms and supplies youth volunteers for these regularly scheduled events. These young people serve as role models in a group-mentoring situation. Opened in 1995, this small step eventually led to purchasing the entire historic Packard Library Building in Marysville, preserving part of Marysville's past while returning it to community use. ˇ FNL Mentoring: 7th and 8th Grade "protégés" are matched with older-wiser 10th-12th Grade "mentors", who meet once a week after school at schools in Yuba and Sutter Counties. Mentoring Sites for 2006-07 are: Marysville High & McKenney Intermediate; Lindhurst High & Alicia Intermediate; Lindhurst High & Yuba Gardens Intermediate; Sutter High and Brittan Elementary; Yuba City High and Gray Avenue Intermediate. ˇ Teen Pregnancy Prevention a Community Challenge Grant funded project that combines education, role modeling and alternative activities to give today's youth the knowledge needed to choose sexual abstinence and reduce the number of teen pregnancies in our area; ˇ Mentoring The Youth Live Center encourages the interaction of individuals with different life experiences to allow youth to realize that there is a whole world of diversity open to them. ˇ Challenge Ropes Course established by the Odyssey Performance Enhancement Network, helps youth and adults work together to solve problems, develop leadership skills and build confidence by combining ropes, cables and climbing experiences in a setting where the actual risk factor is low. The perceived risk is what makes the Challenge Ropes Course experience so unforgettable. Friday Night Live works extensively with other entities to "make it happen" for their activities and people they serve. Every year, Friday Night Live staff, facilities and contacts help:
Why do we do this? To encourage young people to develop a safe, healthy lifestyle. By broadening their horizons, outlooks and interests, they're more likely to become well-rounded, stress-resistant and substance-free adults who are more able to cope with an ever-changing environment. Who helps out? People from all walks of life make Friday Night Live a reality in Yuba and Sutter Counties, including: Country 103.1, KKCY, Colusa-Yuba City- Marysville, which hosts an annual one-day Radio-a-thon. In 2002, it raised $15,612.52 for Friday Night Live. Previous radio-a-thons on KKCY raised money to help start the Youth Live Center in the historic Packard Library, and later to finish purchasing the half-a-million dollar building at 4th and C Streets in Marysville. Golfers and businesses contribute through the Yuba-Sutter Disposal, Inc. Friday Night Live Invitational Golf Tournament to raise funds for the high school's Grad Nights. Volunteers from across Yuba-Sutter form an adult presence at the Youth Live Center during events, and form the heart of the FNL Mentor program. |
